The Laboratory for Medieval Studies and the Department of History of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow) organized the first international PhD and post-doctoral training school in Moscow on The Dynamic Middle Ages. 56 applications to the course were recieved from PhD students and young post-doctoral scholars from Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, UK and Ukraine working in the fields of medieval history of Western, South-Eastern and Eastern Europe or in the area of Byzantine studies. After long process of evaluation by international comission consisting of prominent historians, professors at different European universities 23 applicants were invited to Moscow. The course’s language was English. The course was convened by the Moscow National Research University Higher School of Economics (Professor Michail Boytsov) with the support of the German Historical Institute in Moscow (Professor Nikolaus Katzer), the Institute for Comparative History of Europe in the Middle Ages, Humboldt-University in Berlin (Professor Michael Borgolte) and the Goethe-Institute in Moscow. Coordinators: Maria Alexandrova, Julia Lebedeva. School sessions consisted of a series of lectures held by Professors Mikhail Dmitriev (Moscow, Budapest), Sergey Ivanov (Moscow), Annette Kehnel (Mannheim), Gerrit Jasper Schenk (Darmstadt), Martial Staub (Sheffield), and Thomas Wünsch (Passau) but also of intensive discussions of research projects of all participating PhD students. All visa, travel, transfer, accommodation and meal costs were covered by the conveners.
