  The 18th World Congress of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) was held in Milano, Italy, from Sunday August 28th to Friday September 2nd, 2011. It was a great privilege for Italy to be for the first time the host country of this prestigious event that brings together all the greatest authorities on automatic control systems. The organizers are happy to announce that there was a worldwide audience of 2826 scientists and engineers from academia and industry coming from 73 Countries, all gathered at the Congress to share their knowledge and latest findings. The technical sessions, as well as the pre-congress workshops and tutorials, were given at UCSC (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), located in the historical heart of Milano. The opening and the banquet were hosted at the Milano congress Center MiCo. The program consisted of 9 plenary and parallel plenary lectures, 341 oral sessions, 3 panel sessions and 9 interactive sessions. Moreover 10 pre-congress events were given. The program was complemented with midday cultural events devoted to the works of Leonardo da Vinci and to the Teatro alla Scala.
