4th "The Psychoanalyst at Work" International Conference organised by the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and Moscow Psychoanalytic Society International Journal of Psychoanalysis Moscow Psychoanalytic Society Bureau of Psychoanalytic Solutions The Psychoanalyst at Work' Fourth Conference May 17-19, 2013 Moscow, Russia WELCOME Dear Colleague, We warmly invite you to the forthcoming Fourth conference "Psychoanalyst at Work", to be held on May 17-19, 2013, in Moscow. The theme of this conference, as of the previous three conferences held in Moscow in May 2004, May 2007 and May 2010, is connected to the IJP's " Analyst at Work" initiative. It calls for respectful and constructive discussion of different analytic perspectives on clinical data, and inspires consideration of pertinent methodological questions. The “Analyst at work" format, both in the Journal and at the conference, means that outstanding analysts from around the world submit examples of their analytic work (process material) accompanied by a brief introduction to the patient's history. We do not ask the presenting analysts to give their finest hours or 'special' sessions containing unusual events or meanings, but rather the sessions that are representative of their day to day work - it might be just one session with all the doubts, frayed edges and uncertainties that characterize our everyday practice. We also ask that in addition to the detailed account of what the patient said and what the analyst said, the presenter includes an account of his or her thoughts and feelings during the session. Analysts who think differently about the basic data of analysis may choose to present their material differently. Some, for example, may present exchanges from a series of sessions to illustrate how they work. Other may feel that their work is best represented by accounts of dreams, nonverbal enactments or the analyst's reveries, in each case annotated by the analyst's accompanying thoughts. We are primarily interested in how the analyst works in the clinical setting, and we allow the analyst to choose data that he/she believes best illustrates that work. Then we invite two other colleagues representing somewhat different perspectives and coming from different psychoanalytic cultures, to give their commentaries on the material that has been presented. Their task is to discuss the provided text respectfully and constructively, according to their own psychoanalytic cultures and unique subjective understanding. This task is challenging because the discussants must create their interpretations from written words on a page, not from immersion in vivo in the ebb and flow of an analytic session. They must enter an arena of imaginative play within which they can picture what might be going on in the session and speculate on different ways of looking at the content and the process. They are not supervising the analyst, but merely engaging in a form of creative reflection by placing themselves in the analyst's chair and allowing their associations to lead them in one direction or another. In providing this opportunity, we hope to build bridges between different schools, and to attempt to take down the barriers that separate colleagues and schools in the present day world. This conference held in Moscow, one of the most beautiful cities of Russia, offers a unique opportunity to our colleagues from Western and Eastern Europe, Russia and other countries to meet and improve their capacity to hear each other and get a due insight into each other’s work. The invited presenters and discussants are internationally recognized psychoanalysts. The program includes presentations and responses, panel discussions, work in simultaneous small discussion groups, an IPSO event (special addendum for candidates), а workshop on writing a psychoanalytic paper for IJP and plenty of opportunities for audience participation. It also includes a full day clinical pre-conference session. We hope to see you at our conference which promises to become an intellectually stimulating and emotionally enriching experience.
