This paper examines Moscow's cultural heritage at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries (specifically Moscow of the "Modern" period) as the background against which Liudmila Ulitskaia maps the decline of Russia's intelligentsia in her novel Kazus Kukotskogo (2000). Ulitskaia's novelistic manner of "magical realism"--alluded to in the novel's original title, A Journey to Seventh-Dimensional Space,--is linked to its setting in historic Moscow.
