DEVELOPMENT OF GENERAL MICROBIOLOGY CURRICULA FOR BSC AND MSC STUDENTS IN EUROPE: THE FEMS INITIATIVE A.Netrusov, Microbiology Department, Moscow Lomonosov State University, Moscow 119992, Russia. E-mail: anetrusov@mail.ru. Background. General Microbiology is a rapidly developing discipline due to new, growth independent methods, allowing to study prokaryotes at the single cell level such as stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy and single cell DNA sequencing. The teaching curricula must follow these developments. Objectives. With implementation of the Bologna process of three-level education in Europe the wish to harmonize the education standards in General Microbiology is obvious for European countries. The question: How to train a microbiologist? - will bring different answers in different countries. Methods. A FEMS initiative should outline a framework for a curriculum in Microbiology that guaranties a high and up to date educational standard throughout Europe. Within this framework individual university teachers should develop their own educational programs considering that exchange of teachers and students between Universities in Europe should be possible by having standard credits as recommended by Bologna process. This could be done with a help of new Erasmus+ granting program of EC. Conclusions. FEMS should develop an initiative elaborating a standard curriculum for the training of BSc and MSc students in General Microbiology at all European Universities.
