The low valent derivatives of group IVA elements (Si, Ge, Sn) attract much attention because of interest in “heavy” carbon analogs. The carbene center is very reactive and may be used as precursors for the synthesis of various organometallic compounds and intermediates. Especial interest may be aroused by application of such derivatives as ligands in coordination chemistry. In the course of this work we performed: (i) synthesis of “heavy” carbenes (germylenes, stannylenes) based on dialkanolamines, diethylenetriamines and the related ligands; these compounds are stabilized by intramolecular coordination N→M (M = Ge, Sn); (ii) synthesis of complexes of transition metals with the germylenes synthesized as ligands; (iii) investigation of the structural features of the compounds obtained by various methods (multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, X-ray analysis); (iv) the studying reactivity of “heavy” carbene analogs (insertion, oxidation, [1+4]-cycloaddition).
