Biodegradable and biocompatible materials are of great importance today. The most convenient and efficient method to obtain such materials is the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters. There has been particular attention over the past decade on the development of new catalytic systems for this process. Tetracoordinated group 13 derivatives are promising catalysts for the ringopening polymerization of heterocycles (propylene oxide and (D, L)-lactide). Tridentate nitrogen donor ligands (RN(CH2CH2NHR’)2) can be used for stabilizing four-coordinate aluminum center. We synthesized novel complexes of aluminum based on the related ligands. It has been shown that replacement of alkyl substituent at one nitrogen atom in the ligand has a great influence on the course of the reaction. The crystal structure of the compound 1 was studied by X-ray analysis.
