Phillip Muntz conducted pioneering work and achieved brilliant results in different scientific areas: electron beam fluorescence technique development, improvement of radiographic examinations, and development of the concept of the Knudsen compressor, to name only a few. This paper discusses research inspired by his outstanding experimental results that demonstrated nonequilibrium inside the shock wave in very fine detail and proved the applicability of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method to highly nonequilibrium hypersonic flows. In particular, he and his colleagues measured with very high accuracy the molecular velocity distribution that turned out to be quasi-bimodal inside the shock. In this talk we present results of computations based on different models / approaches to the dilute gas modeling (Navier-Stokes equations, DSMC, R13 equations, UGKS, etc.) of the flow in the vicinity of the point of regular reflection of an oblique shock from the symmetry plane. This problem can be considered as a generalization of the shock-wave structure problem to the more complicated 2D case where the molecular velocity distribution has no cylindrical symmetry in the velocity space. The nonequilibrium observed in such a flow differs significantly from that inside the planar shock: in particular, an overshoot is observed for the temperature of molecular motion normal to the symmetry plane instead of the parallel temperature.
