Methane is the major component of natural gas. Its main application in the chemical industry is generation of synthesis gas through highly endothermic stream reforming. From an energetic viewpoint, catalytic partial oxidation of methane (POM) is an attractive alternative. It also offers synthesis gas with the ratio of H2/CO of 2, which is suitable for production of methanol or higher hydrocarbons. Although Ni-based catalysts are known to be promising for the POM reaction, there are still open questions regarding factors affecting their activity, selectivity and particularly on-stream stability. Thus, the present work was aimed to elucidate the effects of (i) the kind of promoter (Y2O3 or La2O3) for ZrO2 and (ii) supported tiny amounts of Ru on POM performance of Ni/ZrO2 at different Ni loadings.
