The compounds of Group 4 elements (E = Si, Ge, Sn), having single bond element - element due to the presence of σ-conjugation along the chain of E atoms acquire useful properties typical for unsaturated compounds (intense UV absorption, conductivity, electrochemical behavior, luminescence). These properties are determined by the structure of the compounds, and depend on the nature of E atom, number of conjugated E atoms, conformation of the molecule, electronic nature (electron donor or electron acceptor) and steric size of the substituent at E. The report presents the latest results of our research group on the synthesis and study of the structure and properties of oligogermanes and related compounds containing silicon and tin.
