A single component solution-processed organic solar cells fabricated from conjugated donor-acceptor molecules N(Ph-nT-DCV-R)3 exhibits the power conversion efficiency up to 1.1% and maximum external quantum efficiency up to 24%, which are among the highest reported efficiencies of single-material solar cells based on conjugated molecules. These solar cells show small energy losses, resulting in the very high open-circuit voltages of 1.08 – 1.19 V. From measurement of the current-voltage characteristics under different light intensities we established mechanisms of recombination losses. From calculation of the dependence of photocurrent on internal electric field, we identified a field-assisted mechanism of charge generation. Our work tackles questions concerning structure-device performance relationships for conjugated donor-acceptor molecules with the aim of understanding the physical nature of performance losses and further progress in single component organic solar cells.
