I discuss the opposition of external and internal stative meanings and focus of the grammar and lexicon of Dative-Predicative-Structures (DPS) in Russian. The DPS construction conveys the meaning of internal states in Russian. The class of DPS predicatives is not restricted in the lexicon, but new DPS elements can be only added if they satisfy the principles of semantic selection: there are adjectival and quasi-adjectival stems which do not produce DPS predicatives in standard Russian. The typological perspective arises from parametric desription of DPS construction and similar constructions conveying the meaning of internal statives. There are languages with lexically restricted classes of internal statives. There also exist languages without semantic selection of internal statives. The sociological experiment has shown considerable variation in the filling of the DPS class in the idiolects of educated Russian speakers. Meanwhile, almost all speakers retain the same underlying principles of semantic selection i.e. have similar or identic DPS grammar imposed on non-identic sets of DPS elements.
