It is shown that physical state and physical changes that occur in the near-surface layers of nuclear waste glasses in contact with water can readily lead to an effective increase of leaching rate which is similar to alteration rate renewal. This increase is similar to third generically accepted stage of glass corrosion termed alteration rate renewal (or resumption) stage when the glass re-starts corroding with the rate similar to that at the initial stage.
