The influence of starting materials characteristics (i.e. PAN-based carbon fiber and coal tar pitch binder with additives) on properties of carbon-carbon composites was studied. Variable parameters were heat treatment temperature of carbon fibers and the type of carbon additive. It was found that heat treatment of carbon fibers at temperatures up to 2800°C led to the decrease of wear rate and friction coefficient of C/C composite-based discs from 7.0 to 1.1 μm per stop and from 0.356 to 0.269, respectively. Friction surface morphology and friction mechanism strongly depended on heat treatment temperature of carbon fibers. This phenomenon could be explained by modification of abrasive wear resistance of reinforcement fibers and matrix. Addition of different types of carbon fillers (from 3% to 10%) also decreased wear rate up to 2 times and improved mechanical properties of C/C composites. It was explained by reinforcement effect of carbon filler and modification of wear mechanism.
