The lithological composition of surface sediments within the Caspian Lowland is closely related to the Caspian Sea shoreline dynamics (Svitoch, 2014). Sediments of the Early Khvalynsk (Khvalynian) transgression have the OSL dates between 25-12.6 ka BP (Yanina et al., 2017). They are typically represented by morphologically and chemically specific polyfacial strata chocolate clays (ChC), which are usually found on second terraces of Volga, Akhtuba and Ural rivers and only sporadically occur within the Volga-Ural Interfluve, where their influence on soil properties is insufficiently understood.
