The study focuses on revealing the elements of the cultural code used in the novel "Canaan" by José Pereira da Graça Aranha (1868-1931) in order to construct Brazilian national identity. The novel was published in 1902. The cultural code is regarded as a kind of unconscious structure assigned to a specific object or abstract phenomenon, with emphasis on semantic structures that verbalize Brazilian identity. The relevance of the study is determined by the need for a cognitive-discursive analysis of the genre of the Brazilian novel of the first third of the XX century to identify a set of cultural models that contribute to the formation of Brazilian ethnic consciousness. The study systematically presents the contemporary views of Russian and foreign scientists on the issues of the cultural code in fictional discourse. The analysis of the data allows revealing linguistic means used to verbalize the cultural code of Brazilian national identity. Within the framework of the study, we have established the nomenclature of linguistic means used to verbalize elements of the cultural code of national identity and provided information on their qualitative and quantitative characteristics.
