Carbon capture and storage (CCS) stands as the sole effective technology for reducing carbon emissions while still enabling the extensive use of fossil fuels. The storage aspect of CCS entails the injection of CO2, sourced from major stationary emitters, into deep geological structures. Among these, deep saline aquifers present the greatest potential for storage, boasting capacities estimated to be adequate for containing emissions from these large sources for a minimum of one hundred years. Consequently, CCS holds significant promise as a transitional technology towards achieving a future of zero carbon energy sources.
