The goal of the research is to arm the students with the techniques of academic summarising the text as means of escaping accusations of plagiarizing, with the following prospects: • giving students an implement for successful final exam summaries (8000 printable characters text and a student’s research paper report) • applying the skill in oral work (presentations and discussions) and written work (reports, essays, annotations, abstracts and research papers) • applying in further work and life. In this regard, it is significant to teach the students to recognise the text structure, to pick out the main ideas, to save the structure and logical order of the initial text, to paraphrase and shorten the author’s ideas and to proofread the newly born secondary text. In accordance with the plan of scientific work, the book with the working title OUR FRAGILE WORLD has been begun. It is dedicated to developing summarising skills through a variety of reading assignments. The collection of texts is supposed “to inform, to educate, to entertain!” The book can be used for several purposes: • for students’ independent work • in classes in the form of pair work • in classes as group activities • for an individual work. Learning how to correctly summarise will allow: • to stay away from plagiarising • to improve students’ reading skills as they pick out the main ideas of a reading • to help with vocabulary skills as students paraphrase a reading altering the vocabulary and grammar • to develop critical thinking skills as students decide on the main ideas of the reading to include in the summary • to improve writing and editing skills as students draft and edit the summary. The results can be applied not only in academic career, but also in future jobs.
