This report will be devoted to the processes of solar wind plasma and magnetic field penetration into the Earth’s magnetosphere, forming the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL). We show the parameters, which may be taken into account during the investigation of magnetosheath plasma penetration into the Earth’s magnetosphere. We’ll discuss different theories of boundary layer formation, such as reconnection on magnetic field lines, penetration through the cusp region, diffusion through the magnetopause. A new approach in formation theories, that takes into account turbulent fluctuations in magnetosheath, is described. The fluctuations of magnetic field and plasma parameters are observed with the instruments of THEMIS mission satellites. These variations can reach considerable values comparable with the values on the magnetic field lines. That is why the existence of such fluctuations needs to be considered in boundary layer formation study. In our research we analyze the role of magnetosheath turbulent fluctuations in pressure balance on the magnetopause. There is a possibility of local balance violation on the magnetopause during the high level of magnetic field fluctuations. Such processes can lead to the plasma penetration into the magnetosphere and form the boundary layer. Apart the fluctuations in magnetosheath the LLBL thickness formation is influenced by IMF and solar wind conditions. The dependences of LLBL thickness from Bz, By IMF and solar wind velocity are investigated. The parameters of solar wind and IMF are obtained using WIND or THEMIS-B satellites data. Obtained dependences are analyzed and compared with the theoretical predictions.
