Neutrophils are the main population of circulating white blood cells. They play a key role in the fight against bacterial infections. Neutrophils phagocytose pathogens, producing reactive oxygen species and leukotrienes, well-known lipid mediators. An important feature of neutrophils is their ability to apoptosis, which helps to prevent further inflammation. Unmethylated CpG-deoxyribonucleotides (CpG-ODN) are present in large amounts in the bacterial DNA and not typical for mammals. It is believed that these sequences are recognized by the immune system and can induce a specific immune response, for example, activate Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) and increase the production of cytokines. Synthetic CpG-ODN are widely used to study their influence, and potentially could be a component of pharmaceuticals.
