The new course is based on the series of publications [ 1-7 ] and the authors experience both in research and teaching. The course is structured into three parts. The first part is focused on natural (nature-made) chemicals (secondary metabolites and some others), the second part is focused on man-made chemicals (synthetic xenobiotics, and some others). The third part is on selected miscellaneous issues of chemico-biotic interactions in the biosphere that are emerging in modern scientific literature.
The first part is subdivided into a number of key topics, they are listed here:
Biochemical-ecological interactions among prokaryotes.
Biochemical-ecological interactions between fungi and higher plants.
Biochemical-ecological interactions among higher plants; allelopathy.
Biochemical-ecological interactions between plants and animals.
Biochemical-ecological interactions among animals.
Biochemical-ecological interactions and 8 main ecological functions of secondary metabolites; their roles as ecological chemomediators, chemoregulators and chemoeffectors.
The second part is on biochemical ecology of xenobiotics and some other man-made chemicals. Their roles as ecotoxicants and pollutants. Biochemical mechanisms of biotransformations and biodegradation of xenobiotics. The issues of environmental hazards and ecotoxicology. Practical aspects of assessing environmental hazards from chemicals, their connection with issues of biodegradability of the chemicals.
The third part is on some selected miscellaneous issues of chemico-biotic interactions in the biosphere that are emerging in modern scientific literature.
The final part of the course is on application of the facts and concepts of biochemical ecology to practical goals of environmental protection and environmental safety, agriculture, biotechnology, medicine and pharmacology.
