(The article investigates the type of power formed in Russia under the first Romanovs, as it can be found in the works of Russian and foreign historians, and books written by eyewitnesses of the times. The main achievement of the official ideology of the 17th century was the consolidation of notions about the Romanovs as a dynasty. We look at how these results were achieved, paying special attention to the methods of the positioning the tsar power as comparable to that of European kings and thus pretending to attain the status of an emperor. We compare the ideas of Tsarhood as developed by ‘official ideologists’ and by public thinkers. The possibility of alternative versions of the monarch’s power in 17th century Russia are also considered. The wide spread of Aristotle’s ideas in the public thought led to the reinterpretation of his “Politics” under the new conditions of the 17th century. The autocratic monarchy as opposed to tyranny became the ideal type of power for both public and state ideologists. We also analyze the evolution of Russia’s coat of arms during the time, distinguishing between the novelties which were subsequently preserved and those lost to time. We take a closer look at the concepts developed by such Russian researchers as N. P. Pav lov-Silvanskii, F. V. Taranovskii, M. V. Shakhmatov, S. V. Yushkov, L. V. Cherepnin, V. V. Ilyin, A. S. Akhiezer. Of schools in foreign historiography two are represented here - proponents of “military revolution” theory and the school of P. Anderson. We conclude that the contemporaries of the first Romanovs based their understanding of power on personal characteristics of an autocrat. For professional historians, the understanding of power in the 16 th-17 th centuries must be complemented with studying the state machinery in its evolution. Our position is that we should distinguish between the national and European types of absolutism both appearing in Russia.)
