Аннотация:The linear instability of a tangential velocity discontinuity in a partially ionized hydrogen plasma is studied. Atomic gas is collisionless and interacts with protons through resonant charge exchange. At one side of the discontinuity hydrogen atoms are in dynamic and thermodynamic equilibrium with the plasma. In the plasma at other side the charge-exchange cross-section is assumed to be zero. This last assumption can be approximately true for a very hot plasma. The dispersion equation is obtained and its solutions are investigated in the short-wave approximation. It is shown that in addition to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, the charge-exchange process leads to the appearance of new unstable modes that are neutral or absent without the charge exchange. In contrast to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, the increments of the new unstable modes do not depend explicitly on the relative velocity of two plasmas.
