Аннотация:The dissolution of the USSR resulted in formation of new system of interrelations in the Post-Soviet space. Among the most crucial problems were the border issues between the republics of the former USSR, including the development of local cooperation and economic revitalization of border areas. Since internal boundaries became external the border regions of newly independent states transformed their functions from contact to barrier ones. Bilateral relations concerning border issues are still strained in some cases, but the major territory of border zones could be considered as potentially favorable for cooperation. Given article is focused on the problems of economic development of frontier Russian and Ukrainian regions separated by the border in the beginning of 1990-ies, as well as specificity of mutual investments and industrial organization in the proximity to common border. Economic potential of border region is investigated taking into account the events of the Ukraine crisis and the recent developments in Russian-Ukrainian relations that radically influenced the prospective of bilateral cooperation.
