Аннотация:The quantitative parameters characterizing the mechanism of the pseudoliving free-radical polymerization of styrene mediated by macronitroxyls are determined by the example of NR• macronitroxyls formed in situ from phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone. The constant Keq of the equilibrium dissociation of the PNR adduct formed by the polystyrene radical P• and the macronitroxyl NR• is measured according to the mass action law and amounts to 4 × 10-10 mol/l. The rate constant kd of the thermal decomposition of the PNR adduct, determined by ESR, is described by the Arrhenius equation in the 70-120°C range with an activation energy of 116 kJ/mol. The rate constants kN of the reverse reaction of recombination between the propagating radical P• and NR• are equal to 7 × 105 and 3.5 × 105 l/(mol s) as measured using ESR and linearization of the macromolecular chain length distribution, respectively. The high value of Keq and the low value of kN explain the substantially higher rate of the pseudoliving polymerization of styrene mediated by macronitroxyls in comparison with low-molecular-mass analogs.
