Аннотация:Rare earth aluminum borates RAl3(BO3)4 are the recently revealed class of magnetoelectric materials
with giant values of magnetoinduced electric polarization. However the low temperatures at
which the magnetoelectric polarization is observed hinder the practical application of rare earth
borates. We have observed for the rst time in TbAl3(BO3)4 the magnetoelectric polarization
with anomalous temperature dependence: electric polarization induced by in-plane magnetic eld
(P||a;H_|_c-axis) which is small at low temperatures (4K) remarkably increases by almost an order
of magnitude at high temperatures (150-300K). The observed nonmonotonic temperature behavior
of the eld induced polarization including a change of its sign at 65 - 70K is attributed to
the competition of the ground and excited crystal-eld states of Tb3+ ions. The quantum theory
analysis involving the combination of analytical and numerical methods has enabled to describe
quantitatively the observed magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of TbAl3(BO3)4 which can be
considered as promising magnetoelectric and electro-magnetooptical material.
