Modern Evolution of the Salt Composition of the Residual Basins of the Aral Seaстатья

- Аннотация: New hydrochemical data from the residual waterbodies of the Aral Sea situated in Kazakhstan(Small Aral Sea, Chernyshev Gulf, and the newly separate former Tshchebas Gulf) were collected in field surveys of 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Comparison of the recently obtained data with historical records points to the continuing evolution of the salt composition of Aral Sea waters. These processes follow different paths in different residual lakes and significantly affect the physical properties of their waters, such as density, salinity, freezing point, and evaporation rates. We report an increase in the concentration of sulfates in the Small Aral Sea and evaluate the influence of the Syr Darya river runoff on the ionic salt composition of the lake’s waters. In meromictic Chernyshev Gulf, a strong weakening of water stratification by more than two times was observed in 2018–2019, accompanied by a change in the ratios between the contents of the principal ions. For Lake Tshchebas, on the contrary, the ionic composition remained practically constant, despite significantinterannual fluctuations in the level and salinity of its water
