Аннотация:The cytoarchitectonics of speech motor fields 44 and 45 of the brain were studied in five adult men and five women. Total frontal sections of thickness 20 um were stained with cresyl violet for measurement of the thickness of the cortex and its layers, profile field areas of neurons in layers 11] and V, neuron density in layer III of field 45, satellite glial cell density, and the density of neurons surrounded by satellite glial cells. Both men and women showed a tendency to left-hemisphere dominance in the values of a number of cytoarchitectonic measures — the thickness of associative layer III, the profile field areas of neurons in this layer, and increases in the proportions of large and very large sizes in this layer. lnterhemisphere differences in these parameters were more marked in men than women. A number of indictors of sexual dimorphism were identified in men and women. The most significant of these were increases in the densities of neurons, satellite glial cells. and neurons surrounded by satellite glial cells in women as compared with men.
